Into Pandora? Let’s share.
I’m looking to expand my musical horizons. It seems I’ve become so entrapped in the music of my high school and college years, it’s hard to know where to turn for relief. I’ve mostly given up on local radio, and I’m too cheap to subscribe to a satellite service, so Pandora is my outlet of choice.
If you’ve created some cool stations on Pandora, please send me a link. I listen mostly at work, so I’ll favor stations with enough variety to keep things interesting, and enough energy to keep me awake without offending my neighbors.
Need more clues? Fine . . . no hip-hop/rap/gangsta noise. Country is tolerable in small doses. Acoustic rock and folk tunes are encouraged. Easy on the foul language (must be SFW). Other than that, it’s a big, wide world of music out there. Help me discover some new stuff. Surprise me. Impress me. Inspire me.
Sending a link to your favorite Pandora stations is easy. Simply open that station in Pandora, click on the “options” tab, and email it to me. Here’s the address, abstracted to deter the spammers: mn1architect (at) yahoo (dot) com.
I’m really looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers!

It’s a shame how unimaginative local radio has gotten. KFOG got busted a while ago for playing “You Better You Bet” by The Who a ridiculous number of times during a five month span. It’s a fine song from three Decades ago, but it isn’t like the band were one hit wonders. Play “Summertime Blues” sometime you idiots! Pandora hasn’t impressed me. If you try to dig deep with the service, they seem to shepherd you back into the mainstream and predictable.
If you like folk and acoustic rock, try:
1. Gillian Welch. She is a purist. I saw her at the Fillmore and she had the most crowd adulation I have ever witnessed. “By the Mark” is stirring.
2. Jolie Holland. Her first album (Catalpa) is raw with a bit of old blues and some traditional folk. Recorded in her living room, when you play it, it sounds like she is playing in Your living room. The second album (Escondida) has some of her best songs.
3. Joanna Newsom. Her new album just came out and it has three sides. Right now, I don’t think there is anybody else like her out there. Put “No Provenance” on Pandora and see what comes out.
4. Eels new album (End Times) is quite good. “A Line in the Dirt” is about as breakup as breakup can get unless you are the McCourts.

Miguel,
Alternatively you could check out last.fm, which is more euro-focused. They have all the same popular genres, I just find it easier to use to cross-ref and discover obscure bands. I also find it better for non-English language material.

Steve, it pains me to hear that KFOG ain’t what it used to be. For a generation, KFOG was incredibly successful doing what other stations failed at – providing a quality mix of classic rock, alternative and new music. I heard that founding DJ Dave Morey retired a few years ago. I wonder, is the decline perceived (i.e. subject to our taste) or is the station really faltering commercially?

I would that KFOG is doing all right as far as market share and what they get for the insipid adverising, but musically, it is very repetitive (see “You Better You Bet” scandal) and it tends to play the safest (most banal) song from a performer. To wit, my GF and I like Brandi Carlile and because she was doing an event affiliated with KFOG, they gave her air time. The problem was, they played on one song (the “catchy” one) and they played it all of the time. Ms. Carlile has a few radio friendly songs but the brilliance that is Clear Channel would never think of playing one lest they lose a listener.
And I can’t turn the dial because on the community radio at work, I am subjected to tyranny of the majority.

KFOG is boo-wah. I like the Ramones radio on pandora, some “mainstream” punk but other less well known stuff as well. I listen to it at work as it helps me relax, cheaper than valium and less addicting.
